Palmers TV technician mounting TV on wall bracket in Canberra

Common TV installation challenges — solved

Many homeowners attempt TV installation themselves, only to face a range of frustrating issues that our team encounters and resolves every day across Canberra.

Uneven or unsuitable brackets are among the most common problems we see. Using the wrong bracket for a TV's weight or VESA pattern can result in a crooked display, wall damage, or — in the worst cases — a fallen TV. Our technicians match the correct bracket to your specific TV and wall type every time.

Exposed or tangled cords are an eyesore and a safety hazard. We offer full cable concealment, routing cables through the wall cavity or via surface-mounted conduit for a neat, professional finish.

Poor sound from the TV's built-in speakers is a frequent complaint. We can integrate a soundbar or speaker system during installation so you enjoy rich audio from day one, without the mess of cables added later.

Brick and concrete walls require specialist fixings and drilling — not a job for standard domestic tools. Our team carries the right equipment to safely and securely mount TVs on masonry, ensuring your installation is both stable and aesthetically clean.

Choosing the right TV wall bracket

Bracket choice is the single biggest decision in a wall-mount install. Pick wrong and the TV either sits at the wrong height, throws glare into the seating position, or can't tilt away from low afternoon sun. Here's how we think about it during a site survey.

Fixed (low-profile) bracket

Sits 15–25mm off the wall, looks the cleanest, no angle adjustment. Best for living rooms where the couch is directly in front of the screen and the TV sits at proper seated eye height (centre of screen ≈ 1.05–1.15m off the floor).

Tilt bracket

Sits ~50mm off the wall and tilts 10–15° downward. The right choice for TVs mounted above a fireplace, in bedrooms (so you're not looking up from a pillow), and in north-facing rooms where you need to angle away from window glare on winter mornings.

Full-motion (articulating) bracket

Folds flat to ~70mm, extends 400–600mm and swivels 180°. Use in corner mounts, open-plan kitchens where the cook needs to see the screen, alfresco areas where the TV moves out from a recess at the start of a Friday night, and anywhere the viewing position changes by more than a couple of metres.

In-wall recessed bracket

Sits the TV flush inside a wall recess for a near-zero-profile finish. Requires plaster cutting and electrical reroute — strictly a planned-build option, ideally during a renovation. We've done these in Yarralumla, Forrest and Red Hill.

Ceiling drop-down / lift

Motorised brackets that drop the TV from the ceiling or lift it out of a cabinet. Brilliant for media rooms where the TV needs to disappear when the room is being used for something else, but they need careful structural sign-off and an unobstructed cavity above. Always quoted after a site survey.

Outdoor / weatherproof bracket

Stainless or powder-coated bracket rated for outdoor exposure, paired with a weatherproof TV or a covered alfresco set. We use these regularly for covered decks across the ACT — the bracket and TV combination is chosen based on how exposed the position actually is, not what the brochure promises.

Mounting on every Canberra wall type

Canberra has a unique mix of wall constructions — 1960s solid brick in the Inner South, double-brick veneer through Belconnen and Tuggeranong, Hebel panel in newer Gungahlin and Molonglo builds, and stone or rendered concrete in heritage and architect-designed homes. Each one needs a different fixing approach.

Wall type Common in Fixing approach
Single-layer plasterboard on timber studMost ACT homes 1980s+Stud-find, lag-bolt the bracket through the studs. Cable concealment via cavity drop using a fish-tape.
Plasterboard on metal studTownhouses, newer apartmentsHeavy-duty toggle bolts or a structural backing plate spanning multiple studs.
Double brick / solid brickInner South heritage, mid-century CanberraSDS drill into brick (not mortar), masonry anchors sized to bracket load. Cables run via surface conduit colour-matched to the wall.
Hebel / AAC panelGungahlin, Molonglo, Casey, WrightHebel-specific anchors only — standard masonry plugs will pull out. We confirm panel thickness before quoting.
Concrete / blockworkApartments, commercial fit-outsSleeve or wedge anchors rated to bracket+TV weight × 4 safety factor. Slow-drill to keep dust to a minimum.
Stone / rendered heritage wallForrest, Reid, BraddonSite survey required. We try to fix into mortar joints or behind decorative cladding so the original surface stays untouched.

If you're unsure what your wall is made of, send us a photo when you book — the site survey confirms it before we drill anything.

Indicative TV installation pricing in Canberra

Fixed-price after a site survey — these are the starting figures we work back from. Final price depends on wall type, bracket, cable runs and how much existing AV gear is being re-integrated. No call-out fee for the initial consultation.

What size TV is right for your room?

A common mistake we see across Canberra homes is buying a TV based on wall space rather than viewing distance. Too small and you'll squint at the AFL ladder; too large and the picture loses immersion at close range. Use this as a starting point — we'll fine-tune it for your couch position at the site survey.

Couch-to-TV distance 4K TV size sweet spot Best suited to
1.5–2.0m43–50"Bedrooms, study nooks, second living areas.
2.0–2.8m55–65"Most ACT living rooms and family rooms.
2.8–3.6m65–75"Open-plan kitchen/living, dedicated lounges.
3.6–4.5m75–85"Large family rooms, media rooms with TV (no projector).
4.5m+85"+ or projectorDedicated home cinema rooms — see our home theatre page.

A useful rule of thumb: the diagonal size of the screen (in inches) should sit between 60% and 80% of the couch-to-TV distance (in inches). For a 3-metre viewing distance, that's anywhere from a 65" up to an 85". OLED and QLED panels at 4K hold up at closer distances than older 1080p sets because the pixel pitch is finer.

If you're shopping for the TV at the same time as booking the install, we're happy to give a brand-agnostic recommendation — we have no retailer affiliation, so the suggestion is based on the room, not on the margin.

What happens on installation day

  1. Arrival window confirmed the day before. We send an SMS with a 1-hour arrival window and the tech's name. If we're running late, you'll know before we are.
  2. Floor and furniture protection. Drop sheets go down, the TV cabinet area is cleared, kids and pets are kept clear of the work zone.
  3. Final position sign-off. We hold a cardboard template against the wall at the proposed height and you sit on the couch where you actually watch from. If the height doesn't feel right from your seat, we adjust before we drill.
  4. Mount, level, and cable run. Drill, anchor, mount the bracket, hang the TV, run cables. Most single-room installs are 60–120 minutes from drill to first picture.
  5. Configuration and hand-over. Free-to-air tune, smart-TV sign-in, streaming apps, soundbar handshake, basic picture-mode calibration so the screen isn't washed-out or oversaturated. We walk you through the remote and the input switching before we leave.
  6. Tidy-up and warranty docs. Drop sheets out, vacuum, written workmanship warranty (fixed-price, subject to site survey conditions) emailed to you within 24 hours.

TV Installation FAQs

Common questions about TV wall mounting in Canberra.

The cost depends on your TV size, bracket type, and wall material. A standard wall mount with concealed cabling typically starts from around $250. We provide an exact quote during your free in-home consultation — no surprises.

Absolutely. Our technicians are experienced with all wall types common in Canberra homes — plasterboard, double brick, concrete, Hebel, and stone. We use the correct anchors and fixings for each material to ensure a rock-solid mount.

Yes — cable concealment is standard in our installations. We run cables through the wall cavity where possible, or use premium cable management systems for a clean, clutter-free finish. No visible wires.

We mount TVs of all sizes, from 32-inch bedroom screens to 85-inch-plus living room displays. Larger TVs require heavy-duty brackets and may need two technicians, but there's no TV too big for us to handle.

A standard single-TV wall mount takes 1 to 2 hours. More complex setups with in-wall cabling, multiple TVs, or articulating brackets may take a little longer. We'll give you a clear time estimate with your quote.

A fixed bracket sits flat against the wall and suits living rooms where the couch is directly in front of the TV. A tilt angles 10–15° downward and is ideal for fireplaces or bedrooms. A full-motion bracket extends out and swivels — pick this for corner mounts, open-plan kitchens, alfresco areas, or any room with multiple seating positions. The right choice gets locked in during the free site survey.

Yes — we remove existing brackets, fill the screw holes, and where it's required we colour-match the patch so the previous mount points are barely visible. If a full re-paint of that wall is the cleanest path, we'll flag it during the site survey before any work starts so there are no surprises.

Yes. A standard install includes the full smart TV configuration — Wi-Fi connection, free-to-air auto-tuning, Netflix / Stan / Kayo / Disney+ / Prime / YouTube sign-in (provided you have your credentials), and a basic picture-mode calibration so the screen isn't running the over-bright showroom default.

Workmanship on the bracket install is fixed-price and warranted, subject to a site survey and standard conditions — we've been a Canberra family business since 1981 and we stand behind the work. Manufacturer warranties on the bracket and any supplied hardware are passed through to you.
